Grade 6-9?These biographies, with their bright, appealing covers, should attract readers. Lisandrelli draws heavily on Angelou's extensive autobiographical writings, but has also culled several other sources as well. Hurston, too, provides an evenhanded portrayal of a complex and unique woman. The major strengths of both books include an adequate representation of the subjects' lives, including both exemplary and the not-so-exemplary aspects. However, in Angelou especially, the abundance of footnotes may prove distracting. The practice is much less obtrusive in Hurston. Both authors offer honest portraits of strong African American women. Their hard work, optimism, perseverance, and belief in themselves offer inspiration to readers of either sex or any ethnic origin. Yannuzzi (Wilma Mankiller, 1994, not reviewed), awkwardly rehashing information better handled by one of her sources--Mary Lyons's Sorrow's Kitchen (1993)--seldom peeks below the surface of Hurston's checkered literary career and notably unstable private life. A luminary of the Harlem Renaissance, Hurston later became an enthusiastic collector of African-American tales, lore, and cultural practices--but, unable to hold on to money, friends, husbands, or benefactors, died in poverty and remained almost forgotten until the mid-1970s. Through a selection of telling incidents and brief quoted comments, Hurston's intelligence and strong personality come across, but her written work is passed over virtually unassessed in a dry recitation of titles and content summaries that reads like CIP notes. Yannuzzi does not explain how an author supposedly endowed with ``a big talent and a strong will to succeed'' met with such mixed reviews and produced so many rejected manuscripts; readers will come away with only vague ideas of the quality of Hurston's thought or writing. This may be more detailed than Patricia McKissack's shorter Zora Neale Hurston, Writer and Storyteller (1992), but it offers no further insight. The figure of the eunuch in non-Western cultures has long been an object of mystery and mystification to the West. This thought-provoking interdisciplinary work goes beyond sensationalism and stereotypes to offer a sensitive reconstruction of the historical role of the eunuch in Islam. In doing so, Eunuchs and Sacred Boundaries in Islamic Society offers an original and path-breaking exploration into some of the most fundamental aspects of Islamic religion, society, and culture. Shaun Marmon describes how the eunuch as a category of person embodied ambiguity and played a crucial role in premodern Islamic society as both the guardian and mediator of critical thresholds of moral and physical space in the household, in the palace, and in the tomb. Making use of techniques from literary analysis, social history and anthropology, she brings together a wide array of sources ranging from literary works, historical chronicles, biographies, pilgrimage diaries, travelers' accounts, and previously unexamined archival material. Perfect difficulty level

I've been playing piano for most of my life,and I'd consider myself at a moderate level. The music in this book is at a perfect difficulty level for me. It isn't too tough, but it isn't easy enough to play it perfectly on the first sitting. You'll have to practice the songs for a bit (but not too long), but once you get it down it all sounds brilliant. It perfectly captures the essence of Hans Zimmer's awesome music, and including a wide range of his music from Gladiator to Man of Steel.
I would have preferred some different songs to some of the ones included, but that's just me. All in all, you'll have a blast playing through it all.

About the Author
Howard Eisner has served as Distinguished Research Professor in the School of Engineering and Applied Science at The George Washington University (GWU) since 1989. Prior to that time he spent 30 years in industry where he was a researcher, manager and executive, serving as president of two systems engineering companies. Good for those with little or no prior knowledge in this area

This book does provide some valuable information for those with a background in analytical areas of engineering or science and who have a desire and opportunity to become a manager and/or leader. However, for those who have already read a number of books on leadership and taken courses and workshops on the topic (as I have), there is not much new material. The reviews of previous writers are generally succinct and accurate. I was really looking for a book on moving from scientist to leader but there is very little written about that specific topic. So this was the closest thing I could find. Unfortunately, it did not meet my needs. However, I would definitely recommend this book to an engineer who is not already familiar with the existing literature and who is interested in becoming a manager and leader.

A Rush Job that Simply Restates the Adobe Help File

Photoshop CC has a completely different look than previous versions and has many more menus and options. If any app cries out for the "missing manual," this is the one. Experienced Photoshop users can quickly find most of the familiar tools and settings, but it would be almost impossible to figure out how to utilize the full power of the CC on one's own. I learned almost everything I know about Photoshop from my 10-year old, dog-eared copy of "Photoshop 6 for Dummies," and so I assumed that this book would provide the same kind of help. Wrong! Deke McClelland, the author of the old manual, was a lively and opinionated writer who could steer you through the maze of tools and menus by pointing out which were essential and which were repetitious or of little practical use. The CC manual, on the other hand, is a sleep-inducing compilation that adds little or nothing to what is available for free from Adobe's help file and online tutorials. There's not one opinion in this manual nor any other indication that the author has actually USED CC for work or pleasure. I suspect that when the Wiley Corporation,a giant publisher of technical books, acquired the "Dummies" brand they replaced the editors and writers who gave the books their distinctive character, I'm sure that they will find their way to innovative publishers. I just hope it will happen soon.

only a real dummy would buy this

i bought this book when i bought photoshop cc thinking that it would teach me how to use the product. what this book does is elaborately tell you what photoshop can do without actually telling you how to do anything. i read the first 5 chapters and couldn't even begin to work with my photos. i gave up after that. if you want a tome of nearly useless facts, this is the book for you. But if you want to work on your photos, don't be a dummy and buy something else. In all fairness, the author states that this dummies book is a "reference" volume -but do you really need a dictionary when all you want to know is how to fashion a basic sentence?

If you dont understand Photoshop CC dont buy this book.

I am a long term amateur photographer and a reasonably proficient lightroom user. I have played around with many cheaper editing tools (eg PSE and GIMP over the years) I plumped for the LR and PS cc package when they came out so I was looking for a book to allow me get to grips with PS. I was very impressed by the dummies series of books - especially the recent exceptional "digital photography lighting". However "Photoshop for dummies" is nowhere near this standard and I cannot recommend it for the following reasons:

- I am guessing that most readers will be upgrading from basic editing tools like me. For such a readership the first third of the book is wasted - if we need to know what a pixel is in the 21st century then we've bought the wrong program let alone book.
- Likewise the authors enslavement to presenting balanced content for me leads the the last third being wasted too. I think he tacitly admits this by saying things like "it's a reference book". So the last third is non photographic uses of Photoshop and how to use a $2500 pen and tablet combo, 3D and video...
- Finally the middle of the book - probably the main reason people move to Photoshop: layers, selecting, masking, enhancing... This is a disaster. The matey tone is great but not for, lets face it, a software manual ... It's hard to follow the thread and practise what he is describing. I'm afraid we need clear step by step worked examples and clear pictures (see below). Stop describing the benefits and features and options.. .show us one good set of instructions and we will learn by doing.
- Did I mention the pictures? They are muddy and way too small. Important menu selections supposedly being described take up about a millimetre on the page. Whats weird is that the tiny pictures are surrounded by acres of wasted white gutter and margins etc or whatever its called in DTP.

In summary the author has tried to cover everything and fails completely in my opinion. The first third is too basic. The second third is just badly explained and formatted. And the last third is wasted on most people - probably way too little info for someone who needs it. I wish the author had researched what most people in the dummies bracket look for and help them through those tasks - the rest we can then figure out by practising, from the manual that comes with the $2500 tablet and on youtube.
