Awesome Reference Book
By Vanessah Howard
I've been using this book as a reference book--it is chock full of great examples of hair styles, clothing styles, and sections on how to design settings and scenes.

Objectives of this volume:
"To learn the basics of hairstyles and costumes that convey a character's individuality. To learn the tricks in drawing backgrounds as a stage-setting (scenery and time). To learn the techniques for designing a memorable character."

Get this book if you are having trouble with designing characters or hairstyles, or if you are having trouble with backgrounds and settings. Best How to draw Manga series
By xxtsuraraxx
One of the best how to draw Manga books out there. It's hard to find these anywhere. The american market is saturated with the horrible Christopher Hart books. This is a better buy over any other HTDM books! I own a lot of them.

Great Subject
By Ayris
This book has various hints and tricks that you rarely find in other books, and I appreciated them greatly. More often than not I feel manga lacks "life" and I think more people should give this book a shot to being a little blood into their work. I can't wait to breathe life into my own art with this tome as well.

Dance, Spectacle, and the Body Politick, 1250-1750From Indiana University Press

From the mid-13th to the mid-18th century the ability to dance was an important social skill for both men and women. Dance performances were an integral part of court ceremonies and festivals and, in the 17th and 18th centuries, of commercial theatrical productions. Whether at court or in the public theater danced spectacles were multimedia events that required close collaboration among artists, musicians, designers, engineers, and architects as well as choreographers. In order to fully understand these practices, it is necessary to move beyond a consideration of dance alone, and to examine it in its social context. This original collection brings together the work of 12 scholars from the disciplines of dance and music history. Their work presents a picture of dance in society from the late medieval period to the middle of the 18th century and demonstrates how dance practices during this period participated in the intellectual, artistic, and political cultures of their day.

Review

Nevile (research fellow, Univ. of New South Wales, Australia) has assembled an intriguing book that in many ways serves as an encyclopedia of early dance--a feat not easily accomplished in one volume. She arranges the 14 essays in five main sections: "Dance at Court and in the City," "Dance and the Public Theater," "Choreographic Structure andMusic," "Dance and the State," and "Dance, Society, and the Cosmos." The contributors cover the material in detail, explaining how dance served to promote and advance those in the higher echelons of the social order, primarily in Italy, France, England, and (to a lesser extent) Germany--i.e., in countries in which court life defined the "body politick." One misses attention to dance at other levels of the social order and to the fashions and manners that accompanied the fetes and spectacles, but even without these this is a fine resource for those who research this specialized period of dance history. An excellent glossary and bibliography and a "list of dance treatises, manuscripts, modern editions, and translations" complete the book. Summing Up: Recommended. Graduate students and researchers. --ChoiceJ. G. Harris, Independent scholar, March 2009

"... This is a great book for understanding music, dance and the part they played in the period covering 1250-1750, in Europe. It is filled with a whole cosmology of ideas. How the arc of five centuries connect, are enmeshed, develop and flow into our own day. This book is a treasure." -- Paul-James Dwyer, Toronto Early Music Quarterly, Winter 2008

"Makes a serious and much needed contribution to cultural history, filling a gap that to my knowledge is not approached in any other volume. It should be of interest to everyone in the field of cultural history. It provides as complete an overview of dance history as one could hope for that period." -- Timothy J. McGee, Trent University

"The combination of so many well-researched articles on dance, ranging from the Medieval era to the Georgian period, makes this collection invaluable to anyone interested in dance history." -- Mary Jane Warner, York University

A big bite of dance history scholarship is undertaken in this study, and it does not seem to be too big for Jennifer Nevile, the editor of the volume, to chew. She manages to weave an introduction into the book, and each of its six subsections make the promise of its lofty title (and the ideas it appears to embrace) within her grasp. Given the book's vast chronological sweep-rather more than the 500 years suggested in the title, since the very useful essay on 'Plato's Philosophy of Dance' by Graham Pont increases the range substantially-it was my guess, when I embarked on my journey through its pages, that I would find some themes on spectacle or the carnivalesque that would override chronology. Or maybe there would be a sociological/anthropological approach to the embodiment of status relationships (politics) through dance that would render chronology secondary to social configurations. With excited anticipation I dove in, expecting to find something along these lines. Although I was not disappointed, I discovered something quite different. The book features a nice selection of generally excellent essays by some leading authorities in historical dance. Each essay offers information situated in its own time frame, and each presents a secure control of primary and secondary sources and includes a very useful list of recommended reading at its conclusion. Some essays provide tantalizing new details (John S. Powell's piece on Beauchamps and public theaters in 17th-century France and David R. Wilson's review of the basse danse are good examples). Some interpret well-known material in new and promising ways. Jennifer Thorp's piece on 'Dance in the London Theatres c.1700-1750' makes me look forward to her important new work. Two essays review material the authors have already addressed, but nevertheless do so here in a compellingly compact way; Ken Pierce's offering on the choreographic structure of Barouque dance and Margaret M. McGowan's essay on court dancing in 16th and 17th-century France. Only a pair of essays (not counting the deceptively erudite and versatile 'Introduction and Overview' by Nevile herself) really fit the themes of bodies, politics, and spectacle announced by the title. Julia Prest's offering on politics and ballet in Louis XIV's France is pretty perfunctory. But Linda J. Tomko's essay on 'Mr. Issac's The Pastorall and Issues of "Party"' really does embrace the kind of inquiry I was expecting. Tomko's is a truly analytical study that responds with vibrancy to the themes called for by the volume's editor. Most of the authors represented here undertake their tasks with precision and skill. Many succeed, and all should be acknowledged for their contribution: those not already mentioned include Alessandro Arcangeli; Katherine Tucker McGinnis, and Karen Silen. Jennifer Nevile's multiple contributions to the volume cannot be praised sufficiently; her essays on Renaissance dance are impressive, her introduction to the volume full of perception. I suppose we must await some future in which an individual truly finds a connection among the various manifestations of social, stage, and court dancing over the ages. But I wonder if this is really important. Dance, after all, is body, is spectacle, is 'politik' (however we configure it). I'm just not sure that Guglielmo Ebreo (15th century), Cesare Negri (c. 1535-after 1604), or Mr. Isaac (late 17th, early 18th century) shared some common agenda (let alone believed they did) when they created their splendid dances. Nevile, nevertheless, would have us believe that something like the same bodies, the same spectacles, the same kinds of politics were enacted (perhaps unintentionally) over and over again across the centuries addressed in this volume. Maybe she is right. The scholars she has brought together, however, do not appear to espouse such a grandiose vision but appear more concerned with a narrower, well-informed view of dancing in a given place at a given time. Congratulations to them all, and to Nevile for bringing this impressive collection to life. I have profited considerably from reading the offerings presented here, and I am certain others will, too. I will recommend readings from this volume to my students for years to come.Richard Semmens, University of Western Ontario, Professor of Music History, Early Music America : Mag Historical Perf, Spring 2009

"Jennifer Nevile's accessibly written anthology seeks to explore many now obscure aspects of early dance: contributions by twelve scholars elucidate the fascinating, multifarious nature of dance from the thirteenth to the eighteenth century.... contributors demonstrate a high scholarly standard and pursue their chosen themes with assurance and passion. The Seven Daughters of Eve: The Science That Reveals Our Genetic Ancestry, by Bryan Sykes

The national bestseller that reveals how we are descended from seven prehistoric women.

In 1994 Bryan Sykes was called in as an expert to examine the frozen remains of a man trapped in glacial ice in northern Italy for over 5000 years―the Ice Man. Sykes succeeded in extracting DNA from the Ice Man, but even more important, writes Science News?, was his "ability to directly link that DNA to Europeans living today." In this groundbreaking book, Sykes reveals how the identification of a particular strand of DNA that passes unbroken through the maternal line allows scientists to trace our genetic makeup all the way back to prehistoric times―to seven primeval women, the "seven daughters of Eve." illustrated and includes a map

From Publishers Weekly
"A traveler from an antique land... lives within us all," claims Sykes, a professor of genetics at Oxford. This unique traveler is mitochondrial DNA, and, as this provocative account illustrates, it can help scientists and archeologists piece together the history of the human race. Mitochondrial DNA is present in every cell in the body, and it remains virtually unchanged (aside from random mutations) as it passes from mother to daughter. By quantifying and analyzing the mutations of this relatively stable circle of DNA, Sykes has solved some of the hottest debates about human origins. For example, he clarified a long-running debate among anthropologists over the original inhabitants of the Cook Islands. After retrieving mitochondrial DNA samples from the island natives, Sykes concluded that the natives emigrated from Asia, not America, as many Western anthropologists had contended. In a similar manner, Sykes analyzed samples from native Europeans to determine that modern humans are not at all related to Neanderthals. The book's most complex and controversial find that the ancient European hunter-gatherers predominated over the farmers and not vice versa leads Sykes to another stunning conclusion: by chance, nearly all modern Europeans are descendants of one of seven "clan mothers" who lived at different times during the Ice Age. Drawing upon archeological and climatic records, Sykes spins seven informative and gracefully imagined tales of how these "daughters of Eve" eked out a living on the frozen plains. (July 9)Forecast: Sykes is a bit of a celebrity geneticist, as he was involved in identifying the remains of the last Romanovs. This fame, plus his startling conclusions augmented by a five-city tour should generate publicity and sales among science, archeology and genealogy buffs.

From Library Journal
Sykes (genetics, Oxford Univ.; editor, Human Inheritance: Genes, Language, and Evolution) is passionate about his work in decoding mitochondrial DNA and about using this knowledge to trace the path of human evolution. To lure readers into this specialized work, he relates personal and historical anecdotes, offering familiar ground from which to consider the science. A discussion of the history of genetics and descriptions of the early landmark work of Sykes and his associates culminate with his finding that 90 percent of modern Europeans are descendents of just seven women who lived 45,000 to 10,000 years ago. Brief biographies serve to place these "seven daughters" into historical context as understood by archaeology. This is an example of good popular science writing that makes difficult concepts accessible and relevant to the general reader. Recommended for public libraries. (Index not seen..

From Booklist
From Eve, the earliest known hominid, discovered in Africa, geneticist Sykes traces a genetic linkage to seven prehistoric European women. A gifted writer, he conveys the excitement and drama of his discovery of strands of DNA that passed unbroken through the maternal line. He names the seven women he found in that line and extrapolates probable lives for them, based on anthropological data, thereby bringing them to life. His particular quest began with examining the remains of a 5,000-year-old man found in Italy and proceeded amidst the competitive pressure of other scientists, professional tensions between colleagues, and his sense of the fun involved in making his discoveries. In the end, he can trace living Europeans from some of Eve's seven daughters. Sykes is keenly aware of the professional and human significance of scientific inquiry and discovery, as well as of the woeful history of the use of genetics by racist theories--awareness that adds to this exciting contribution to showing that all humans share a common ancestry. Top-notch scientific survey, with bizarre fictional chapters
By D. Cloyce Smith
The first 200 pages of this book exemplify the best of scientific journalism: the author describes a difficult subject matter clearly and succinctly for those who don`t know much about genetics, he presents each scientific investigation as if it were a detective story, and he conveys his excitement and enthusiasm for his work. Anyone who reads this book will come away with enough knowledge about mitochondrial DNA and prehistoric humans to understand today's headlines. Sykes explains how DNA testing identified the bodies of the Romanovs (laying to rest fanciful stories about how they survived the Russian Revolution), he rebuts Thor Heyerdahl's theories of migration, and he presents a convincing case that all humans of European ancestry are descended from seven women. (He also discusses the possible ancestries of non-Europeans, for which--so far--there is far less evidence.)
Given how compelling and fun the majority of the book is, nothing prepares the reader for what comes next: seven chapters containing fanciful and completely fictional reconstructions of each of the "daughters of Eve." Sykes admits he cannot even be sure of where or when each of these women may have lived, but he reconstructs little soap operas out of the nonexistent facts of their lives; these New Age-inspired outtakes from "Clan of the Cave Bear" do not succeed even as good fiction. "Xenia was born in the wind and snow of late spring." "This year Helena's father was going to try a spear-thrower and detachable point for the first time." "Velda had a strong artistic streak." "Tara had always been a fast runner and her father, fit though he was, was gaining on her slowly." (Tara even "invents" a boat.) He fabricates entire families and children, births and deaths, relationships and tragedies for each of these women, even though he knows for certain only that they each had two daughters. For the most part, I found these chapters embarrassing and unreadable.
If Sykes wanted to speculate for the reader where, when, and how each of these women lived, he certainly could have done so in a scientific framework and made it interesting. For example, he could have presented what we know from the archaeological record about their approximate eras and possible environs. (I would in particular like to know what evidence, if any, scientists have uncovered to imagine that prehistoric societies featured mostly monogamous relationships, which figure prominently in Sykes`s stories.)
Fortunately, Sykes turns his attention back to the science in the last two chapters. Overall, except for the fictional chapters, this is a first-rate survey. I do wish, however, that the author had added a bibliographical essay or general notes, both to support his arguments and to suggest where readers might turn, now that he's managed to enlighten us on the subject.

So Who is your G. G. G. Grandmother?
By Terry
Information about the Mother line of the 7 women who entered Europe at different times and became the Clan Mothers of Europe. Easy to read the author personalized the DNA lines by giving them Names and placing them when & where they estimate they begin there migrations into Europe.
What Seven Mother's accomplished.

An easy to read genetics book!
By Stefanie
I thoroughly enjoyed this book, which was a total surprise. If you had told me a few weeks ago that I would be devouring a book about mitochondrial DNA and its role in tracing human evolution, I would have laughed. But this book is extremely easy to read. Sykes' narrative style, which includes a discussion of the complicated science of genetics but framed in stories of how he has used science to solve mysteries, makes it very easy to follow what he's saying and to actually learn about this exciting area of science.

I loved the research projects he discussed in the first part of the book, including testing the Romanovs and exploring the origins of native Polynesians. I agree with a friend of mine who also read this and thought that the book is actually *less* interesting when he gets into the hypothetical biographies of the Seven Daughters themselves.

But overall, I have been recommending this book to everyone I know. It even came in handy as I was at a discussion group focusing on the topic of intelligent design, and I was able to speak intelligently about what I'd learned about human evolution through Sykes and his research.

Martius: The Book of Palms, by H. Walter Lack

Trees of paradise: All known genera of the palm family in 240 exquisite illustrations   On December 15, 1868, Carl Friedrich Philipp von Martius (1794–1868), Professor of Botany at the University of Munich and director of the Royal Botanic Garden, was carried to his grave in a coffin covered with fresh palm leaves. These were a reference to his groundbreaking Historia naturalis palmarum: opus tripartitum (Natural History of Palms: a work in three volumes), published between 1823–1853. At the time, this encyclopedic treasury contained the sum of human knowledge on the topic, and included 240 exquisite chromolithographic illustrations, including landscape views of palm habitats and botanical dissections.

This epic folio was based on Martius’s expedition to Brazil and Peru with zoologist Johann Baptist von Spix, sponsored by King Maximilian I of Bavaria, to investigate natural history and native tribes. From 1817 to 1820 the pair traveled over 2,250 km (1,400 miles) throughout the Amazon basin, the most species-rich palm region in the world, collecting and sketching specimens. On their return both men were awarded knighthoods and lifetime pensions.

In his epic work, Martius outlined the modern classification of palm, produced the first maps of palm biogeography, described all the palms of Brazil, and collated the sum of all known genera of the palm family. For apart from his own collection of specimens and notes, Martius also wrote about the findings of others. Martius’s folio is unusual in its inclusion of cross-sectioned diagrams, conveying the architecture of these mighty trees, which central Europeans would have found hard to imagine accurately. Equally remarkable are the color landscapes showing various palms—often standing alone—which have a simple and elegant beauty. This famous work is an unrivaled landmark in botanic illustration and taxonomy.   Text in English, French, and German

Superlative publication, then & now
By M. Flikweert
This is an extraordinary publication: it is a Folio sized "Thome".
Looking at the large plates, meticiously drawn and coloured, I realise that before the technique of photography there was an obsession with reproducing natural scenes in a realistic manner, especially in the Natural sciences. The craftmanship is extraordinary. Plates depict microscopic plant anatomy, Geograpical maps with global distribution, graphs depicting growth etc. and habitus in situ, in vivo.
It will prove its value again, like it did in 18 something.

The Long Emergency: Surviving the End of Oil, Climate Change, and Other Converging Catastrophes of the Twenty-First Century, by James Howa

A controversial hit that sparked debate among businessmen, environmentalists, and bloggers, The Long Emergency by James Howard Kunstler is an eye-opening look at the unprecedented challenges we face in the years ahead, as oil runs out and the global systems built on it are forced to change radically.

From Publishers Weekly
The indictment of suburbia and the car culture that the author presented in The Geography of Nowhere turns apocalyptic in this vigorous, if overwrought, jeremiad. Kunstler notes signs that global oil production has peaked and will soon dwindle, and argues in an eye-opening, although not entirely convincing, analysis that alternative energy sources cannot fill the gap, especially in transportation. The result will be a Dark Age in which "the center does not hold" and "all bets are off about civilization's future." Absent cheap oil, auto-dependent suburbs and big cities will collapse, along with industry and mechanized agriculture; serfdom and horse-drawn carts will stage a comeback; hunger will cause massive "die-back"; otherwise "impotent" governments will engineer "designer viruses" to cull the surplus population; and Asian pirates will plunder California. Kunstler takes a grim satisfaction in this prospect, which promises to settle his many grudges against modernity. A "dazed and crippled America," he hopes, will regroup around walkable, human-scale towns; organic local economies of small farmers and tradesmen will replace an alienating corporate globalism; strong bonds of social solidarity will be reforged; and our heedless, childish culture of consumerism will be forced to grow up. Kunstler's critique of contemporary society is caustic and scintillating as usual, but his prognostications strain credibility. (May)

From Booklist
Kunstler established a writing career criticizing American suburbia (e.g., The Geography of Nowhere, 1993), and his animosity against his bete noire does not abate here. It's a wide--casting, statistics-studded ramble through energy production and technologies, world economic and political history, and climatology that culminates in predictions that the suburbs are doomed. His assertions are always self--confident, sometimes immodestly so, as when he dismisses in toto any possibility that the market, or technologists, will rescue contemporary civilization from a world of declining oil production. Discerning an imminent future of protracted socioeconomic crisis, Kunstler foresees the progressive dilapidation of subdivisions and strip malls, the depopulation of the American Southwest, and, amid a world at war over oil, military invasions of the West Coast; when the convulsion subsides, Americans will live in smaller places and eat locally grown food. Credit Kunstler with an energetic argument, but whether he has achieved his stated goal--waking up an ostensibly somnolent public--via his relentless and alarmist pessimism remains to be seen. Review
“It used to be that only environmentalists and paranoids warned about the world running out of oil and the future it could bring: crashing economies, resource wars, social breakdown, agony at the pump. Not anymore. . . . America’s dependence on oil is too pervasive to undo quickly, [Kunstler] warns. . . . In the meantime, we’ll have our hands full dealing with . . . the soaring temperatures, rising sea levels and mega-droughts brought by global climate change. Not long ago, a Jeremiah like Kunstler would have been dismissed as a kook. . . . As brilliant as it is baleful . . . and we disregard it at our peril.” —The Washington Post

“This is a frightening and important book.” —Time Out Chicago

“If you give a damn, you should read this book.” —Colin Tudge, The Independent

“What sets The Long Emergency apart…is its comprehensive sweep—its powerful integration of science, technology, economics, finance, international politics and social change, along with a fascinating attempt to peer into a chaotic future. Kunstler is such a compelling and sometimes eloquent writer that the book is hard to put down.” –American Scientist

“[A] popular blueprint for surviving the end of oil.” —Paul Greenberg, The New York Times Book Review

“Funny, irreverent, and blunt.” –The Globe and Mail

“An especial strength of this book is its break with some of the more pernicious strands in the contemporary left, specifically the left’s kneejerk rejection of America acting militarily in its national interest. . . . There are hints of Malthus here, and of Oswald Spangler’s Decline of the West as well. Mr. Kunstler’s book is a jeremiad, driven by authorial presence. Pithy, entertaining descriptions of historical phenomena like the Soviet Union . . . enliven the text, allowing the veteran commentator to expound on themes that might read leaden by a less facile wordsmith. . . . The book succeeds as an accessible primer to a looming crisis that could end the American way of life.” —A.G. Gancarski, Washington Times

“Kunstler is an amusing and engaging observer and polemicist, and the terrain he surveys is unforgiving and perilous.” —Robert Birnbaum, The Morning News

“Novelist and journalist James Howard Kunstler is the leading popular voice of peak oil, the theory that says we have gone through more than half the world’s supply of this much-needed resource. Kunstler’s regular Monday morning posts foretell a world beset by oil shortages, which he believes will lead to everything from financial shenanigans (sound familiar?) to food riots, not to mention attacks on the wealthy, abandoned suburban housing developments and a forced return to small-town living.” —Helaine Olen, Portfolio

“Kunstler displays a kind of macabre wit about the unpleasantness and strife that await us all. . . . His assertions have a neat way of doubling back to anticipate your critiques. If you express doubt about his views, then you may well be among the deluded masses too addicted to your McSUV and McSuburb to accept the reality that lies ahead.”
—Katharine Mieszkowski, salon.com

“Kunstler is America’s version of an Old Testament prophet, a stinging social critic who warns of dark days ahead if we do not change the way we live.” —Brian Kaller, Pulse

“Kunstler’s book was shockingly readable and engaging….He covers a vast array of topics…I felt like I’d taken a crash course on Big Oil, Global Warming, and Geopolitics just to name a few.”—Romi Lassally, Huffington Post

“James Howard Kunstler’s The Long Emergency may be destined to become the Dante’s Inferno of the twenty-first century. It graphically depicts the horrific punishments that lie ahead for Americans for more than a century of sinful consumption and sprawling communities, fueled by the profligate use of cheap oil and gas. Its central message—that the country will pay dearly unless it urgently develops new, sustainable community-scale food systems, energy sources, and living patterns—should be read, digested, and acted upon by every conscientious U.S. politician and citizen.” —Michael Shuman, author of Going Local: Creating Self-Reliant Communities in a Global Age

“If you give a damn, you should read this book.” —Colin Tudge, The Independent (UK)

“Kunstler concentrates on the continuing environmental instability and the political consequences of the fuel cessation in equal bouts and this makes for a well rounded argument.” —Buzz (UK)

“In the annals of doomsday literature . . . The Long Emergency is destined to become the new standard. . . . Demands frank consideration of what up to now has been unthinkable: that the ascendancy of the human race might have been a temporary phenomenon. . . . This case has been made before, but here it is made powerfully and articulately, with no apology and no hint of reprieve. . . . The Long Emergency represents a ‘wake-up call’ in the same sense that a hand grenade tossed through your bedroom window might serve as an alarm clock. The book is stark and frightening. Read it soon.” —Jim Charlier, Daily Camera

“A shrewd and engaging social commentator.” —Sierra Atlantic

“Adds a relentless, scary, and entertaining voice to the rising alarm about life after the cheap oil is gone. . . . The internal logic of the argument is persuasive, and one reads . . . the book with white knuckles.” —Bryant Urstadt, technologyreview.com

“Authoritative and eye-opening. His predictions for the future make for a page-turning ‘Brave New World.’” —T-D (London)

“James Howard Kunstler has given us, with his usual engaging wit and verve, a new kind
of post-apocalypse scenario. Instead of the nuclear or ice-age wasteland of our earlier imaginings, he has depicted with detailed extrapolation the civilization of the United States after the oil runs out and a great economic collapse occurs. It is a strangely arcadian vision, like the agrarian America that Jefferson, Calhoun, and the Southern Agrarians dreamed of. But Kunstler has fleshed it out with delightful quirky insights and provided our science fiction writers with a fresh mise-en-scene.” —Frederick Turner, author of The New World and The Culture of Hope

You’ll love wallowing in it
By Quantum Thinker
(** Misleading title ! NOT a practical perspective or survival book !**)
If you are a "true believer" in relativism that believes in the current fads of global warming, anti-oil, "sustainability", over-population, etc.; believes that man's ingenuity cannot overcome obstacles; and believes the USA is an arrogant, slothful, racist and wasteful polluter with no redeeming traits that should die a slow death out of guilt for it sins of abusing finite hydrocarbons, then this read is for you. You’ll love wallowing in it. It is generally more a social commentary than a serious scholarly presentation.

The bottom line is that he admits not having any answers and unsure of the future himself. He really offers no solutions to his bleak outlook on life.

Anyone can choose a side and then go after supporting data and sources to support their viewpoint - as all pre-filtered editorial perspectives do. For this topic, I happen to understand both factual and conjectural sides of the issue (he does not) and could easily debate either perspective about planetary resources. He would have been better off doing the same in his book, presenting both sides for the reader to contemplate. I got thru roughly 50% of this book and stopped due to tedious redundancy of the same material which is essentially a constant negative (and selective) view of past history with a bleak unredemptive future replete with a thesaurus of hopeless words, concepts and writing structure. It appears as if the author imprints his self-admitted personal tragedies (including multi-generational divorces & isolation) with their attendant bitterness into his writings.

Similar to the author, 'am in his age bracket; originally born & raised in upstate NYS; a grad from the SUNY system. But unlike the author, have been involved intimately in the oil & gas industry, living in the South for years. As such I would say this man is immersed in ignorance (feigned or real) as well as acute depression - but refuses to treat either! He would celebrate the suicidal end of evil planet sucking mankind including his own.

NOTE: Book published 11 years ago with dated material & prognostications.

A powerful look into the near future
By Martin G. Portner
I must admit that I was prepared for this treatise on our civilization's future by having already read some very good books and articles on the subject including Dr. Steve Leeb's masterpiece, "The Oil Factor", and "Game Over" and also the daily updates on my favorite energy-related web site, "The Oil Drum" [...]. So, in a way this review is from a member of the choir, not a neophyte that has come to this point of view via sudden epiphany.

That notwithstanding, I found the prose in this book quite enjoyable to read and at times, caused the hair on the back of my neck to stand straight up, due to the content. How is it that we let our endowment of oil, this cheap, easy-to-find and extract energy source, be squandered on something as unsustainable as the American urban and sub-urban lifestyles? Mr. Kunstler explains this foolishness in a series of chapters that exposes the cluster of memes that permeate our thinking and render us utterly powerless to stop or even slightly modify our wasteful behavior patterns. The memes of "There is plenty of easy-to-get-to cheap oil and it's just a matter of finding it" and "If we can get the tree-huggers to give up on ANWR, we will be in like Flynn" and my favorite, "Technology will save us with some new energy delivery system based on hydrogen, wind power, solar power, natural gas and if all else fails, nuclear power to propel us into the future!" are all part of the trance that we have entered as part of the constant over-supply of, among other things, mindless entertainment that distracts our attention while extracting dollars from our wallets, with very little in return to show for our time spent gazing at our televisions, movie screens and computer monitors.

Mr. Kunstler carefully decomposes each of these memes (and many more) to shows the likely consequences of what holding on to them will cost us.

Two other points: I needed to have a dictionary handy when reading this tome. Mr. Kunstler's writing vocabulary dwarfs my reading vocabulary! Also, I think that he is predominantly correct, but that his predictions will unfold much slower than he suggests in his book. New economies will spring forward and become widespread and cushion the shock when "Peak Oil" manifests for real. However, I am taking his description of the "dog days" (or should it be "dog years") of the Long Emergency at face value and preparing for them now. If it does not happen, I will be way ahead of the game in terms of detachment from the material aspects of life and more self-reliant as a consequence. If he's right, well, the same analysis applies.

speculative but still worth reading
By Michael Lewyn
By and large, this book rests upon two factual claims:

1. The world supply of oil and natural gas is starting to decline, and will continue to decline in coming decades.

2. No alternative technologies will bail out industrial civilization, because most other sources of energy cannot be created without prodigious amounts of oil and natural gas (which, if assumption (1) is correct, will not be around).

If assumptions (1) and (2) are correct, industrial civilization will disappear, and standards of living will decline around the world.

I have no way of knowing whether assumptions (1) and (2) are in fact correct; these seem to me to be technical issues that only scientists can have informed opinions upon.

But having said that, Kunstler does present an interesting case that (1) and (2) are at least possible. And he certainly presents a good case that if (1) and (2) come to pass, civilization will take a giant leap backwards. So I think this book is worth reading, even if one should not take it as gospel.

I do think it could have used a bit of editing in the second half; judging by the most negative reviews, many of Kunstler's comments therein about Wal-Mart, the South, etc. seem to have needlessly inflamed readers, and I found his discussion of "entropy" and the economy hard to follow in parts. But even if you skip the second half, the early chapters of this book are worth reading.
