Excellent technical information

I mainly paint in watercolor; there are dozens of good informational books for that medium. But there aren't many clear, direct, practical books with technical information about materials and techniques for traditional, realistic oil painting. "Glazing" is by far the best one I've found. (And no, I don't know the author nor have any connection to him.) The information about mediums, historical and modern, was worth the price to me, as I've been experimenting on and off with oils and haven't found my way around them yet. There are just too many types of paint, too many mediums, too much conflicting advice in various books and online. This book is clear about what the author, who says he has worked extensively in painting conservation, recommends. There's also good information about safe working practices. Also, the book has excellent historical information about pigments and mediums; it makes you wonder how the oil painters of the past lived through working with all the dangerous pigments and mediums. Of most interest, naturally, is the technical information about layering and glazing, and it's very clearly presented. The book is well illustrated. My only complaint is that it could have used more editing, and fewer incomplete sentences (you guessed it, I'm an English major). The author's suggestions about methods and materials seem sound, although I haven't tried them out yet. There's also limited info about alkyds oils, acrylics, temperas and watercolors, and if and how they can be used with oils.

A wealth of hard-to-come-by information.

When I received this book I was stunned by the amount and depth of information that it contains. As a painter I am willing to take the extended periods of time necessary to build a painting up in layers, but unfortunately patience is not enough. I frequently find that after a meticulously executed grisaille underpainting, I am at a complete loss as to how to achieve the colors and effects I desire. Often the "obvious" choice produces a sickly glaze that I cannot wait to wipe off immediately. (One good thing about glazing is that you have the equivalent of the "Undo" key!) This book is truly the bible on glazing, and it immediately revealed why I was running into trouble. It is an invaluable resource for the painter who chooses to work in the traditional underpainting/glazing approach. Also I rather enjoy the author's rather tongue-in-cheek style after all the overstuffed purists that one runs across.

the best book on glazing that I've ever come across

Without a doubt, the best book on glazing that I've ever come across. But it's not only about glazing, it's about your materials too. I've been painting for 40 years and didn't realize how fugitive some of the colors and mediums I use are. This book caused me to swap out some of the colors in my palette and now I only buy paints and materials when I know what's in them. It's a fantastic book, well researched and very informative. I couldn't;t recommend it more for anyone who is serious about not only glazing, but also about the craft of painting.

What can I say, it's the Urban Penguin. This book is amazing. It really helped me to understand how to configure Networking via the SystemD framework. Book does a very good job breaking down the nuances you'll need to understand what's new and how it differs from the old. Amazing books. People by the "who" more than they buy the "what." Make sure they know who you are.

I bought this book about a month ago and got through it pretty quickly. It's very well written, with clear explanations and examples. In some ways it targets the UK public, but for the most part it applies to everybody who is a little hesitant about blowing his or her own horn.

I recommend this book very highly to anybody with any ambition. As Jennifer Holloway points out, you'll need to develop your personal brand both for outside your current company and for what you do inside. People by the "who" more than they buy the "what." Make sure you know who you are and are communicating it clearly in all the ways you interact with people (in person, on the phone, in email, on linkedin, and so forth). Make sure people know what they are going to get when they work with you.

I'll finish with another excellent point made by Holloway, be authentic. Not everybody is going to like your brand, you can count on that. So communicate who you are clearly and face the fact that not everybody will like it.

Whether it's in person, in the office, or online, Jennifer delivers the how-to of creating, promoting and maintaining your personal brand. I personally love the real-life, easy to read examples on every other page titled, "here's what I'm talking about." Go ahead and purchase several books and pass them out to your colleagues. They will thank you!

Reviewer: A reader from Reno, NV USA I used this book and found the questions to be very close to the type used on the MCAT. While there are a few typos I found this book a great way to review for the exam. Of this type of resource I found this to be the best one for OChem.

About the Author
Dr. Gilbertson did her undergraduate work in chemistry at Valparaiso University. She received a PhD in chemistry from Northwestern in 1994. She has been involved in teaching specifically MCAT science since 1996. She is currently undergraduate Laboratory Supervisor at Washington University in St. Louis.

Exam Style

This book is a hasty review of Orgo, but it covers most of the MCAT material in relatively small number of pages. Although some diagrams are not very helpful, it tells you most of what you need. It is basically a good book if you are a time-pressed pre-med trying to take the MCAT in 2 months. If you have more time, I recommend reading over your orgo textbook once more and doing problem sets in various other MCAT preparation materials (the ones with only MCAT style problems). Hope this helps.

About the Author
Oscar Wilde (1854 1900) was born and raised in Dublin, Ireland. Wilde is no Gorki nor no Brecht

This rewriting of Romeo and Juliet is not convincing at all because the Nihilists are reduced to sectarian fanatics, the Czar to a manipulated tyrant, the courtiers to bloodthirsty powerhungry wolves, the Czarevitch to a romantic puppy suddenly grown adult. Vera, the most popular and feared Nihilist, will kill herself out of love to save the Czarevitch who is on a trail of reforms after the assassination of his father. This caricature has nothing to compare with Gorki?s The Mother, nor Brecht?s Mother Courage and Her Children. It is yet interesting to see how Oscar Wilde is far from understanding what simple suffering people can be in Russia at that time and what the psychology of the Nihilists was. He uses quite many clich?s and does not get into any depth. So the superimposing of a pale Romeo and Juliet ending does not give depth to something that is shallow.

An experience!

Other reviews before me have done a better job on the literary and artistic value of Vera, so I wont offer any arts review.

I ordered and read this play because it was Wildes first, and was interested to read and imagine it staged, and compared it mentally to his other well known works that I enjoyed, like the Importance of Being Ernst, etc. This, to me, was a far superior play - it was not a satire in the way we think of Wilde, it was a very intellectual and fascinating work, that I read 3 times at one sitting.

A great play! I wish I could have seen it staged, all I can add to you, all I can offer, is the hope you will take this opportunity and read it. Its well worth it, and deserves an audience.

If you are a Wilde lover, you will want to read it, and if you are not, perhaps this will truly impress you.

Wilde's first play!

I bought The Importance of Being Earnest for a friend's birthday and found this play by accident. I had never known or thought about Wilde's first play before, until finding it here on Amazon, (what a great book store!), I'm half way through, and I'm impressed. Its actually good to read, as its not some social commentary, but a very literary work, there are many elements from other historical works here, which I have read up on to understand more, and that's one of the reasons I like it, it challenges me and makes me think.

Wilde does that to people! If you are just looking for some witty remarks, try The Importance of Being Earnest but if you want a little more, add this to your order, as I did, and read something different.

Truly recommended!
