Ages 4-7. Molly has been looking forward to a new baby in the family, and when her mother miscarries, the entire family is sad. Mom and Dad explain that not all babies are strong enough to be born and that we don't always understand why. Grandma compares a miscarriage to events in nature--not every robin's egg hatches and not every rosebud blooms--adding that when a baby is born, it is special and wonderful. Through open communication, Molly and her parents work through their grief and look forward to the beautiful blossoms their newly planted rosebush will yield. A lengthy note to parents introduces the text, and soft pastel illustrations add to the comforting tone of the story. Great book for children of parents who miscarry

I bought this book in anticipation of the day when our little girl will ask who is the "other" baby on our wall. Although the book is a little long and she will need to be 3 or 4 to understand it, I think it will be a great help to us when it time to explain about her lost brother.

"Molly's Rosebush" helped explain miscarriage to our son

The first time I read this book, I knew it was going to be a world of help in explaining our miscarriage to our son. The story is very gentle, very sweet, and involves not just the mother and older child, but her father and grandmother too. There are several analogies in the book that help explain the "why" of miscarriage to a young child. It is a sensitive, beautifully written story. The foreward for adults at the beginnig is also wonderful. I would recommend it for any family who encounters the need to explain a miscarriage to a child.

Good but Missing Query Reference

I'm a developer with a degree in CS and 10 years' experience. I bought this book for an SQL Server 2000 project, because I've got more experience with mysql which has slightly different syntax and doesn't support stored procedures.

I guess I just assumed this book would contain query syntax reference. But it doesn't. It is very thorough on stored procedures and xml and I'm sure I will be glad I have it.

But-

If you don't already have one, you will still need to get a query syntax reference.

There are many realistic examples and suggestions that help solve complex and everyday SQL problems quickly.

This book supplies everything that you need for stored procedure development - from naming conventions to methods to deploy changes in production.

Several ways to accomplish a given task are described, with pro's and con's for each. Sunderic includes not only "how", but "why and why not".

This book contains not only stored procedures, but triggers, user-defined functions, XML and more.

Clear, practical, and affordable

What should every ESL student know?

Beats me. One size fits all philosophies often seem a bit strange to me. Can anybody really answer this question for every international student and ESL college student? Really? Don't circumstances, needs, and desires differ?

On the other hand, administrators, teachers, future college students, and current international ESL students constantly face this common question. What should every ESL student know?

Fortunately, braver and more confident souls feel comfortable answering this reasonable question. That's why a small green and purple book, What Every ESL Student Should Know: A Guide to College and University Academic Success, caught my eyes at a recent English teachers' conference in California. Kathy Ochoa Flores, the author, has both more confidence and deeper insight into this essential, yet puzzling, question. In 119 pages, she displays considerable wit while dispensing practical advice to international students and immigrants preparing for college.

"My students always want to know what they should do to learn English," notes Flores in chapter 2. "I tell them to marry an American - one who is a native speaker and rich. That way, they can have someone to practice with every day, and they won't have to worry about working and studying at the same time. Unfortunately, this advice does not work for most of my students."

So Flores goes on to advocate, since many students are already married or too young to get married, to at least make some American friends. In bold print, she argues: "Native English speakers are everywhere. Use them. They are like free tutors." How? Take the bus, sit down next to some nice looking American, and start talking. Seek out the elderly since they tend to have both more free time and might be lonely. Talk to children, meet a school counselor, and ask many questions. "Talk to the telemarketers who call you during dinner time, and ask them lots of questions about their products." I completely agree.

This affordable book provides dozens of these imperative statements followed by detailed advice. Written in a clear manner, the concise format and friendly style make this book a wonderful book for newcomers. Easier to read, smaller in scope, and less than controversial than the popular book What's Up, America?, this book serves a slightly different purpose. Both titles help international students adjust to American college campuses, but What Every ESL Student Should Know focuses more on survival skills. International counselors, orientation coordinators, and even English language schools could provide a real service to their students by including this thin book in their orientation sessions and pre-college materials. The minimum cost will pay for itself by reducing ESL student stress.

Meanwhile, future international students should find it and buy it. This "one size fits all" work offers enough tips to satisfy any ESL student - and even a sceptical ESL university teacher!

His reporting fundamentally reframes the event: Columbine, he writes, should be thought of as a failed bombing rather than a school shooting. Furthermore, much of the conventional wisdom about how to prevent such attacks—essentially, watch out for pimply outcasts with a grudge—is confounded by an investigation into Harris’s and Klebold’s actual lives. Most critics, with Janet Maslin a notable exception, thought that Cullen’s account helps us to better wring meaning from the tragedy. In sum, Columbine “is an excellent work of media criticism, showing how legends become truths through continual citation” (New York Times Book Review).

I'd recommend Columbine: A True Crime Story by Jeff Kass

This book is filled with errors, from Eric Harris being a ladies man (based on a false statement that was later taken back) to claiming they weren't bullied even though their friends and journals prove otherwise. He also describes Dylan Klebold as a borderline innocent accomplice even though he is the first one to write about murdering a large amount of people. I'd recommend Columbine: A True Crime Story by Jeff Kass, No Easy Answers by Dylan Klebold's longtime friend Brooks Brown or Comprehending Columbine by Ralph W Larkin.

Dave Cullen: Myth Buster

I read a lot of true crime, but usually, I prefer books about serial killers. After all, as John Douglas has opined, quite a bit is actually known about serial killers, as many of them that are captured come out alive, and many of those are willing to talk. In comparison, it is not uncommon for mass murderers (MMs) and spree killers to "go out in flames," and so it is difficult to interview these types after their crimes. After all, dead men tell no tales.

Well, this is usually the case, but not exactly so here. "Luckily" -- if this is the correct word -- in this case, both of the killers kept diaries and video evidence that was recovered after the massacre. So in comparison with other MMs, quite a bit is known about Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold, the perpetrators of the violence. Recently, I watched a documentary entitled "The Columbine Massacre: Inside the Killer's Mind" (which should have been "killers'" instead perhaps, since there were two of them), and I actually liked it more than most reviewers on this site. Many people complained about the accent of the narrator, which I found to be a little bit silly; after all, I don't believe he is American so you would expect an accent. But if you watch that documentary, you will learn quite a bit about the killers, mostly from interviews with acquaintances of the killers and "found footage."

And of course, you'll learn even more if you read "Columbine," and I highly recommend that you do. Oddly, I laughed in quite a few places, as the author -- Dave Cullen -- smartly uses the killers' own words against them at different points in the book, in a satirical kind of way. I think that this really works. Furthermore, Mr. Cullen wisely chose against a strictly linear narrative; this book would've been incredibly boring if it were told in a sequential format. Instead, we bounce back and forth between timeframes, and characters, and it keeps the book interesting and fresh. (Usually, I prefer mostly a linear narrative, but it just wouldn't have worked in this case.) Also, Mr. Cullen, even though I believe that he has worked as a journalist in a "past life," is not afraid to rip on journalists in general and their "craft," as it seems that he believes many of them do more harm than good. Finally, instead of taking the easy way out, Mr. Cullen is not afraid to attack many of the myths of Columbine and show that many of those myths are just plain wrong. Let's just call him a "Myth Buster."

Well, after finishing "Columbine," I returned to my favorite crime sub-genre and am currently reading "Hunting a Psychopath: The East Area Rapist / Original Night Stalker Investigation - The Original Investigator Speaks Out" which is probably an overly-lengthy title. But I decided to read that because I not only wanted to read another serial killer book, but the FBI is giving another push to solve that case as I write -- they just released information in hopes that someone's memory might be jogged. It is interesting, however, that the EAR/ONS has never been caught, so we still don't know much more about him that most MMs. But if you're into true crime, and you're looking to take a little break from serial killers, I'll go with a pretty strong recommendation on "Columbine."

Incredibly thorough investigation of the Columbine High School massacre and factors surrounding it on all sides. Dave Cullen does a phenomenal job at deconstructing the inaccurate narrative that most of us still hold about the event, and provides a platform for the victims' stories to be heard as well. We need critical, thoughtful explorations like this book if we are to truly learn from horrific events like Columbine.

About the Author
Katie Chin was born and raised in Minneapolis by her award-winning restaurateur mother, Leeann Chin. She is the co-author of Everyday Chinese Cooking (Clarkson Potter, 2000) and author of 300 Best Rice Cooker Recipes and Everyday Thai Cooking. She was co-host with her mother, Leeann, of the 2003 national PBS cooking series Double Happiness. Katie has made numerous appearances on The Today Show and has appeared in specials on The Food Network and Fine Living. She has been featured in Glamour, Family Circle, Cooking Light, Bon Appetit, Self Magazine, Angeleno Magazine, Hampton Magazine, Elle Magazine, Daily Candy, Daily Variety, Real Simple and The Los Angeles Times. Katie has served as a guest judge on Food Network's Iron Chef America and appeared on Cooking Channel's Food(ography) program in 2013. When not testing out her new recipes on family and friends, she divides her time as a private chef and culinary consultant. Katie has been called the "Asian Rachel Ray" by many of her fans because of her sparkling personality and approachable style.

Foreword-Writer, Raghavan Iyer, is an IACP Award–winning Teacher of the Year, and author of 660 Curries, Betty Crocker's Indian Home Cooking, and the James Beard Award Finalist The Turmeric Trail: Recipes and Memories from an Indian Childhood. Asian cuisine is my absolute favorite. But admittedly, I was very intimidated to cook dishes on my own...until now. Katie Chin's recipes are easy to follow making these dishes approachable yet authentic. There is a very helpful section highlighting all of the key Chinese ingredients you need to know as well as basic cooking techniques. I've tried many of Katie's delicious recipes and all have been welcomed with rave reviews from friends and family. Firecracker shrimp, Canton-style chow mein and glazed salmon have become regulars in my kitchen which was once devoid of any Chinese creations. Katie also weaves in wonderful and personal anecdotes that will keep you entertained throughout the entire book. Highly recommend!

Great for beginners!

The recipes were easy enough for a great meal. I like to cook and enjoy Chinese food, however I don't trust restaurants to not use msg. So after my wife's urging I purchased a 16" wok and dove in.
Now that I'm comfortable with the various spices and sauces my backyard chef personality just wings it most of the time.
Katie and her mom are inspiring ladies. I enjoyed the family story she shares as well.
I highly recommend this book for an introduction to good Chinese dishes.

This is a fantastic cookbook. I love the explanation of ingredients, the recipes for sauces and the easy to follow but creative and delicious recipes. I would recommend to anyone who is a lover of Asian cuisine.

Fun little read!

I thought this was a fun read. Its short but thats what its suppose to be. I really love Vanessa Cox books. They are erotic but they also have fun personalities to them. Great read!
