As if I had a crash course about electronic mixing and got a perfect score at the comprehension exam

In the church where I attend service regularly, we recently purchased a mixer- basically to mix sound quality, but no one is well equipped to do the right mixing. In most times, despite the several attempts to create a great sound in the stereo field, we just couldn't get it right. Fortunately, I came across this book and started looking for answers on how I could help solve the issue at hand. It was kind of desperate.
At first, because I literally have no clue about mixing, my assumption was -this is going to be very hard. To my surprise, IT IS NOT HARD AT ALL. Mind you, the writing style is so simple, in just a snap, I was blown away how my mind was switched on a 360 degree and end up saying, I can break a leg on this one.
I would like to quote the author, that mixing is like building a house. You have to start brick by brick and choosing the right element that is important, rather than boosting all levels up to prevent a disaster- is what it's all about.
As if I had a crash course about electronic mixing and got a perfect score at the comprehension exam- that's the feeling I got after reading this. No exaggeration. It was as if, a fishbone was taken off my throat. Finally, I can do something for the church.
And because I highly recommend this book for the people who wanted help like me, here are the things that made this book worth 5 stars= easy to read writing construction, the explanation technique is downright steady and gradually increasing its level- you won't get choked up with information, great pro-tips- quite insightful, and a lot of HOW TO's including how to do complementary EQ'ing, how to dash off bad frequencies and more. There are topics that seem complicated to execute for me such as chain , parallel and other compressions, but I believe this is something that most musicians and mixers could relate- I am a newbie here, so basically although I understand that compression is the secret tool for mixing- I still have a lot to learn to make a kick-ass effects in the future or perhaps take my nook and literally read and do demo immediately after each page to get the feel of it. Oh before I forget- the claps and snares smashing reduction sound is awesome. Too much of the clapper is irritating, so the information I got is divine.

Bringing my music to a new level

I've always had a passion for producing my own, unique music, however I've never went out of my comfort zone. It's just recently that I've been looking to push myself and really improve the quality of the mixes I create. So after some research I decided to get this book as it looked promising. And I definitely wasn't disappointed.

It is obvious that the author knows what they are talking about as a lot of accurate, helpful information is given, as well as the book being very well written. Clear instructions are there to follow so I knew exactly what to do.

I especially enjoyed the chapters on advanced stereo effects and musical side chain compression, which were all explained in a manner I understood. Overall, this guide really helped me learn more about how to improve my music, and after using what I've learned I can really hear the difference. I definitely recommend.

Mixing music is a creative art form. I wanted to learn it madly. But, I am not sure how to begin. When I saw this book in Amazon Kindle Store, I instantly downloaded it. Catching Up

Larry Niven's candour about his writing and his frequent references to his own work mean the fan and scholar have an easy and fun time reading his works and tracing them back to their sources and seeing how they all link together. The problem for readers outside the US is tracking down where these stories appear. So it's great when a collection like this comes along. The previous three, N-Space, ,Playrounds of the Mind and Scatterbrain offered a thorugh retrospective of Niven's writing career up to just before the publication of Ringworld's Children, his last solo novel, and Stars and Gods picks up the bibliography from there.

In and around the stories and excerpts from novels are little introductory pieces by Niven giving you the ral-life background or literary environment in which the piece belongs and sometimes these intros explain a point that might be a bit obscure in the text. Like most Niven they're worth pondering a bit and you get nice aphorims about the writing craft, too. Plus the introductions and afterwords are what's it all about--they're the written equivalent of a DVD commentary.

My personal highlight is "The Gatherers' Guild". Niven says this is his best conspiracy story, so if you like the idea that there are not-so-secret government agencies covertly running your life, buy this book.

I am not going to apologize!

For my love of Larry Niven's work. No, I am not, I can't really explain it, as it doesn't seem to mesh with the rest of my tastes when it comes to written fiction. The writing isn't in any way impressive, the characters... Okay I love Louis Wu and Beowulf Schaeffer, and Chmee, but past that? In the whole vast set of Larry's work I can barely name anyone else. But if you find that you like his work then get this thing, gobble it up and enjoy!

Prologue

I know I shall bee taxed for writing so much of my selfe, but I care not much.
– John Smith


On December 30, 1607, an Englishman was dragged before the paramount chief of the Virginia Indians. His abductors brought out two large rocks, and placed him with his head resting on the boulders. He lay prostrate, waiting for a mercifully swift execution. It was dark inside the longhouse, and as the prisoner’s eyes slowly adjusted to the gloom, he became aware that around him, about two hundred people were looking on in fascination. For most, it was their first sight of a European.

The prisoner was strong but not tall, standing only as high as the shoulders of his Indian guards. His thick beard mostly covered the ruddy complexion of someone who had spent most of his life in the open. The man was a few days short of his twenty-eighth birthday, an anniversary that he did not expect to celebrate. As he lay prostrate on the ground, his Indian guards raised their war clubs above his head, waiting for the command from their chief to execute him in their traditional manner – by beating the brains out of his skull.

From the shadows of the smoke-filled longhouse, a young girl of perhaps ten or twelve emerged, naked from the waist up, and with only a wisp of black hair hanging down from the back of her shaved head. She turned to the great man presiding over the ceremony, with a familiarity and self-confidence that suggested she knew the chief well. She did, for he was her father. The girl pleaded that the stranger’s life be spared. The Englishman understood little about what was being said, for his comprehension of the Algonquian language was still rudimentary.

The chief considered his daughter’s appeal carefully. He was an old man, perhaps sixty or eighty years old, broad-shouldered, fit and powerfully built for his age. He wore a robe of raccoon skins with the tails still attached, and around his neck hung a chain of pearls. He was clearly held in awe by all those present, and “at the least frown of his brow, their greatest will tremble.” The chief was dispassionate as he considered the young girl’s request, his face showing “a grave and majesticall countenance.”

The Englishman had no option but to await the judgment that would soon seal his fate.

The rescue of Captain John Smith, English soldier and adventurer, by the Indian “princess” Pocahontas is one of the oldest and most enduring legends to come out of the colonization of America. Smith wrote that “at the minute of my execution she hazarded the beating out of her own brains to save mine; and not only that, but so prevailed with her father, that I was safely conducted to Jamestown.” Since that bitterly cold afternoon in December 1607, the story has been celebrated worldwide in books, paintings, feature films and animated cartoons.

The only European witness to the event was Smith himself, and his account has been questioned by historians ever since it was published in 1630. If the only debatable episode in Smith’s extraordinary life was this encounter with Pocahontas, then his version of events might not have attracted quite so much derision. But this was not the case.

Smith’s autobiography, The True Travels, is packed full of the most incredible incidents: that he fought, defeated and beheaded three enemy commanders in duels; that he was sold into slavery, only to murder his master and escape; that he was captured by pirates, survived shipwrecks and marched up to the gallows to be hanged – only to be reprieved at the last moment. All this happened, or so John Smith claimed, long before he met Pocahontas and her father.

Some of Smith’s achievements are beyond dispute, most especially his success in saving the Jamestown settlement in Virginia during its first two brutal winters. Despite being a difficult and argumentative man, the surviving settlers recognized that Smith had exercised the skill and experience to help them survive. He also constantly clashed with his fellow colonists, and was charged with being a braggart and a liar. One leader of the colony wrote that Smith was “an ambityous, unworthy and vayneglorious fellowe”.

Yet rather than being universally lauded for saving England’s first permanent settlement in the Americas – which ultimately led to North America becoming part of the English-speaking world – Smith was vilified, maligned and pilloried. So was he really such a villain? Or might he be the victim of envy, internal division and historical misrepresentation?

In his own writings, Smith did little to endear himself to a sceptical reader, or to an assiduous historian. He frequently claimed he was in the right, and that others were incompetent. His spelling was chaotic, his grammar confused, and his dates and timelines were an embarrassment to any self-respecting chronicler.

In his defense, Smith never claimed to be an historian, nor did he ever expect academics and writers to be poring over his memoirs more than four hundred years after his birth. Nevertheless, given his inflated ego, he would most certainly have taken great satisfaction had he known this would be the case.

In every sense, Smith was a true Renaissance man: a soldier of fortune, captain of cavalry, colonist, adventurer, diplomat, surveyor and mapmaker; he was also a pirate, a mercenary and a self-confessed murderer. Unravelling the facts from the fiction is complex, but the truth is more revealing and intriguing than you might have imagined.

Indeed, Smith never lost his capacity to stir indignation amongst his detractors, or to arouse great loyalty in his supporters. He combined admirable strengths with great weaknesses: he was authoritarian and autocratic, yet vulnerable and insecure. His life was a catalogue of defiance and confrontation, disorder and contradiction. It is these flawed and very human characteristics that make him such a fascinating character.

Smith left many diaries and memoirs of his astonishing exploits, but which of his more fanciful claims are the writings of a deceitful self-publicist and which are anchored in the historical record? This new evaluation of John Smith combines an appraisal of his life with a detective story, as we follow in his footsteps, constantly challenging and assessing his claims. In doing so, we can test his writings against the local history and geography, about which he wrote so much.

So what can be made of this man? Is he villain or victim? Even making exception for his archaic writing style, it remains to be seen whether Captain John Smith deserves redemption.

I was really sad at the end when he died

Even though I knew the story, I couldn't put this book down. I read it in three or four sittings and couldn't wait till the next sitting. This is an extraordinary book about an extraordinary man. I was really sad at the end when he died, as I felt I had shared John Smith's amazing adventures, hardships and joys and probably gotten closer to him than most people during his lifetime. A huge amount of research obviously went into this book. But it is never plodding. Smoothly written and easy to read.

A real page turner. Mr Firstbrook has gone through a lot of trouble to show the reader exactly how Captain Smith became the man he was, and it is this analysis that makes the book so unique. Captain Smith is the original Flashman. A thoroughly enjoyable read!

Two thumbs up, you won't want to miss this one!

One of the best things about this series is both the world behind it and the progression the characters make as they navigate it. I love how every Remy thought she had things figured out, something new would come along or something would change throwing a wrench into things. Not only did this keep things interesting, but it only made me fall for Remy more as she continued to persevere and stand up for what she thought was right no matter the obstacle thrown in her path. And boy let me tell you there were some major obstacles this time around. Everything really came to a head, and I loved seeing it all come together one last time to blow things out of the park.

I'm not the biggest fan of love triangles. When they do pop up in books, generally I'm loyal to a core, choosing the first guy and sticking to him throughout. However, that wasn't the case here as I feel head over heels for Asher's brother, Gabe in the previous book. After Asher dies, Remy and Gabe become very close and you can see how much he cares for her, but things never move past just "closeness" as Remy's still hurting so much from her loss. I understood that and loved Gabe all the more for not rushing things. But of course at the end the rug got ripped out from under me when it turned up Asher wasn't gone after all. Don't get me wrong, his death was devastating, but the author handled the healing and transition to Gabe so well that I wanted only Gabe for her. Unfortunately IGNITED opens up with the love triangle in full force as Remy and Asher try to reconcile who they were and who they are now, with Gabe mixed in there too, leaving me more than a little frustrated. It was painfully obvious things were more than over between the two of them, as Asher just couldn't cope with her making him human. Gabe on the other hand never once faltered, and I have to admit wanting to yell at Remy more than a few times to wake up and see. But don't get me wrong, I do think the whole situation was handled very very well from a writing stand point as it was very realistic and there wasn't any sudden changing of feelings. A definite win in my book.

It's always bittersweet to say goodbye to a series I've loved, but I do enjoy it when that series ends with a good send out. One where you close the book on a sigh of contentment, and that definitely was the case here. Would I have wanted more from this series and world? Sure, as it's really well written and the characters suck you right in. But despite my wish for more, I'm very satisfied with the way things turned out and want to give the author major kudos for doing a great job pleasing this very hard to satisfy with endings reader. Two thumbs up, you won't want to miss this one!

a great conclusion to the series

Overall, a great conclusion to the series!

I love Remy. She's a character that has a great balance of strong and vulnerable. Too often heroines in these types of books are either super emotionally weak or they're ridiculously strong. I find myself frustrated because they either collapse in on themselves or they shrug things off way too easily. Remy is someone I feel for and enjoy reading her story. Though she's in a fantasy world, her struggles feel real and endearing.

The shifting dynamics between her and the two heroes was well done. In this book, we see how Asher's torture at the hands of Franc has changed him and how it effects his and Remy's relationship and the repercussions for them and for Gabe. I have to say that Asher fell dramatically in my opinion, while Gabe stole my heart away...and yes, I realize how ridiculous it is to say that about fictional character, but he did!

The plot moved a little slow in the middle of the book. This story focuses on Remy and her group trying to rescue her dad, Ben, but they do spend a lot of time sitting around waiting for things to happen. While mostly this time was filled with great character development (which I loved!), there were times when it lagged a bit. I loved the ending. Jackson spent quite a bit of time winding down the story and it really worked in this series. It gives a great sense of closure without everything being wrapped up in a cute little bow as they all ride off into the sunset. It feels like they've reached a moment of peace and bliss and have been able to assure themselves some peace, but there are still a lot of issues in the air and sadness. I liked it because it gave time to show the characters dealing with the fallout of the final climax, rather than just immediately ending the story.

The mythology was a little more convoluted in this book. It introduces a new concept--the Pheonix. It was a little bizarre and I'm not entirely sure it really fits in well with the rest of the story. It felt a little tacked on, unnecessary, and a bit inconsistent. It made it sound as though only a Pheonix could heal a Protector's immortality and the Healer-Protector hybrids could only do it with someone they bonded to, but there are many times where Remy was able to heal the senses of Protectors without being bonded. And I think the idea of the Protector's immortality was a bit inconsistent. It was made to sound as though the Protectors had superhuman abilities pre-immortality (not as strong as after attaining immortality, but strong none-the-less), but when they start getting healed by Remy, they turn into normal humans and lose things like the mind-connection bond and their speed and strength. It didn't make much sense.

All that aside, I loved the series and thoroughly enjoyed it. Even with the few little issues here and there, I really enjoyed it. It's cute, dramatic, and really fun all at the same time.

Thrilling Conclusion to a Fabulously Original Series

In this exciting finale, Ignited will captivate fans and have them rushing to see the conclusion of their favorite characters. Ms. Jackson takes readers on a thrill ride that they never want to leave. This book picks up several months after Pushed ended. Asher, Lucy, and Remy are on the run, trying to avoid being captured by Remy's grandfather, Franc, but also trying to find her and Lucy's father. Things take a turn for the worse between Asher and Remy, and things do not look good for them in the beginning of the book. Asher is clearly hiding something, as he won't talk to Remy, and he is extremely distant. What does this mean for Asher and Remy? Will they find her father? Will Remy give her grandfather what he wants, and give herself over? Well, you'll have to read to find out, but every one of those questions is answered by the end of the story.

One of my favorite aspects of this story is the characters. Remy has always been an extremely strong, kick-butt character, but in both Pushed and this novel, she shows a remarkable growth. She learns that it's okay to ask others for help, and that she isn't all alone. Remy learns that it's okay to let people in, and sometimes you have to let others go. Finally, she realizes she can't take on every single problem, because she's only one person. Comparing the Remy of this book to the Remy in the Touched is simply amazing, and shows how gifted Ms. Jackson is with her writing. She has created a complex character that shows true growth in a realistic manner. Not a character that instantly changes everything about herself because of a certain person or event. Asher, who I loved in Touched kind of got on my nerves in this one. If he would have talked things out with Remy, instead of pushing her away, I feel like they could have sorted things out earlier on. Gabe, who I fell in love with in Pushed, really took center stage in this novel. I loved how he interacted with Remy, and he truly compliments her in every way. In the second book in this series, I was still rooting for Asher and Remy, but by the end of the second book, Gabe had wormed his way into my heart. Because of this, throughout Ignited, I wanted Gabe and Remy to be together. They have many cute moments, and I loved every single scene with them together.

The writing in this book is phenomenal, and the world that Ms. Jackson has created is simply mind-blowing. It's completely unique and very refreshing to read. Every fight scene is executed perfectly, and the heartbreaking moments are tear-inducing. There is a lot of action in this book, and with all that action and danger, some characters pay the ultimate price, and don't make it out alive. There is one death in particular that is very moving and tear-jerking. I was very sad to see this character go, but it was a very touching scene, nonetheless.

This is a definite must read for fans of the Sense Thieves series. You will not be disappointed by the ending, as it will leave you with a smile on your face. I absolutely loved this entire series, and I will be re-reading these books for years to come. Add this to your TBR list now! Happy reading :)
