Who Was John F. Kennedy?

The small boat sped quickly along in the dark. It was a hot night in August. The thirteen men onboard were quiet and tense. Their mission was a scary one: They were looking for Japanese warships in the Pacific Ocean.

Suddenly, there was an explosion.

The small boat was ripped in half by a Japanese destroyer returning to its base. Two of the crew were killed instantly. The other eleven men clung to pieces of the boat until morning. Then the wreckage began to sink. The captain decided they all must swim to the safety of a nearby island. The men didn’t think they could make it.

“Will we ever get out of this?” asked one.

“It can be done,” replied the captain. “We’ll do it.”

One of the men was burned so badly that he could not swim. He told the captain to save himself and the other men. But the captain would not leave the wounded man. He swam for five long hours with the burned man on his back. When they reached the island, the captain discovered two natives and a canoe.

He also discovered a coconut shell on which he carved these words:

NATIVE KNOWS POSIT

HE CAN PILOT 11 ALIVE

NEED SMALL BOAT KENNEDY

He gave the shell with the message to the islanders who went by canoe to another island nearly forty miles away. Six days after the patrol boat was destroyed, the brave and quick-thinking captain and his crew were rescued.

The captain’s name was John Fitzgerald Kennedy.

Chapter 1
Little Boy, Big Family

On May 29, 1917, a baby boy was born to Joseph P. Kennedy, a wealthy, Irish-American businessman, and his wife Rose. They named him John Fitzgerald Kennedy, in honor of Rose’s father—John F. Fitzgerald.

“Honey Fitz” as he was called, had been a popular politician and a former mayor of Boston. When his daughter Rose began dating the young Kennedy boy, Honey Fitz was not so sure he approved. But the couple kept seeing each other and, eventually, Honey Fitz was won over by Joe’s hardworking and ambitious nature.

IRISH IMMIGRATION TO THE UNITED STATES

IN THE 1840S AND 1850S, MORE THAN ONE MILLION IRISH IMMIGRANTS SAILED TO AMERICA. BACK IN IRELAND, THE POTATO CROP HAD FAILED. WITHOUT THEIR STAPLE FOOD, AT LEAST ONE MILLION PEOPLE DIED OF STARVATION AND DISEASE. THE IMMIGRANTS WHO CAME HERE WERE CRAMMED INTO CROWDED, DIRTY SHIPS. NEARLY 20 PERCENT OF THEM DIED BEFORE THEY ARRIVED. THE ONES WHO DID WERE CALLED THE “FAMINE IRISH.” LIKE MANY NEW IMMIGRANT GROUPS, THEY FACED DISCRIMINATION AND HATRED. THEY COULD NOT EASILY FIND JOBS OR PLACES TO LIVE. SIGNS WITH THE WORDS “IRISH NEED NOT APPLY” WERE COMMON. THEY TOOK THE ONLY WORK THEY COULD GET: LAYING RAILROAD TRACKS, SHOVELING COAL, DIGGING CANALS, AND CLEARING SWAMPS.

A great book and a great way for your student to learn about a past president.

My fourth grader needed to research a past president and her teacher assigned JFK to her. We found this book online and she read it over a weekend. It was easy to read and she was able to retain the information easier than just looking at facts on the internet. She truly felt she knew about JFK and now she wants to know more about Jackie. Apparently she was a fashion icon and so that was all it took for my daughter. What a great way to learn history and to learn about a president that was frozen in time at the prime of his life due to his premature death. Highly recommended for your student.

Excellent!

I wish they would actually put this series as being listed in the adult section! Why? Cause they are informative and big worded enough for an adult to enjoy. The illustration are not kiddish though enough for a teen to enjoy. I've read 302 pgs of these books so far, and I found all three of them to be captivating. I never really had an history class, and I loathe textbooks. This is more than I would actually get in a textbook if I read about John F. Kennedy, Albert Einstein, and Neil Armstrong. For instance: I didn't know about Neil Armstrong's daughter, I did know about Albert Einstein's sons only cause I read a 500pg book on him, and it took me two years of sidetracking to get it read. I already knew a lot about the Kennedys because I'm a space fan, and I've read parts of books on him already not too mention documentaries. I read these in about an hour before dinner. But seriously, they should be in the young adult section at least, as well. The only history I have truly learned comes from biographies,documentaries,museum trips, and I love it. I hope this person writes more of these.

Supplemental reading- just the facts

I purchased this book to supplement my grandson's reading on John F. Kennedy. By purchasing this book, I wanted to show my 13 year-old grandson that there were other available sources he could use to help him understand his main reading.
I have since read this book and it is simply a linear volume of facts; and I think the "cartoon" illustrations are to somehow enhance the story, for me, it does not. The story weaves in and out of its basic story line. If you're looking for "just the facts" about the Kennedy clan this book should be okay.

About the Author
Hal Blumenfeld is Professor in the Departments of Neurology, Neurobiology, and Neurosurgery at Yale University School of Medicine. He has taught neuroanatomy at Harvard, Yale, and Columbia Universities using the approach of Neuroanatomy through Clinical Cases, which the students greeted with highly favorable feedback. He recently received the prestigious Francis Gilman Blake Award, as the most outstanding teacher of medical sciences at the Yale School of Medicine, and the Dreifuss-Penry Epilepsy Research Award from the American Academy of Neurology. He has also been awarded several major grants (from the National Institutes of Health, and private foundations) to pursue his research, which focuses on epilepsy as a model system for investigating consciousness. Current projects include neuroimaging, neurophysiology, and behavioral experiments in animal models of epilepsy, and direct application to human patients. His clinical training included an internship in Internal Medicine at Columbia Presbyterian Medical Center, a residency in Neurology at Massachusetts General Hospital, and a fellowship in Epilepsy at Yale University School of Medicine. He studied Bioelectrical Engineering at Harvard University, then earned a Ph.D. (in Physiology and Cellular Biophysics) as well as his M.D. at Columbia University.

Buy It. Just Do It.

I am a second year medical student in California. I have recently boarded the struggle bus that is neuroanatomy. I have never taken neuroanatomy prior to medical school, and to say its overwhelming is an understatement. Another note - I own the Haines Atlas(9th E), this text, FA, and Firecracker. Professional students have a limited budget and need to find the most high yield resources. This is the one.

I never usually buy textbooks because they suck. This is the anti-textbook. It actually is designed to be read, in order, and it is engaging, relevant, and interesting. The pictures are bomb. It constantly checks your understanding, references other section of the text (THAT MAKE SENSE AND ARE RELEVANT), and everything is clinically relevant. Finally, a book written by a clinician for clinicians, not researchers or academics. Purchase it. Read it. See how it effortlessly owns all other texts and actually pushes you to GET neuroanatomy to HELP PATIENTS, not uselessly memorize that the trigeminal system has 4 nuclei, or that there are 5 descending motor tracts, or remember some research extraneous bullcrap that fills the volume of much of our medical textbooks.

Dr. Blumenfeld, if you are listening, can you make a trip to California to school your colleagues about how to write clinically oriented organ systems based texts and teaching materials?

absolutely necessary

I bought this book at the beginning of the term and didn't open it until I got desperate halfway through.

Other than the drugs, cancer, and histology&pathology sections of the course, this book had everything. It is laid out better, it is integrated from clinical presentation, to exam, imaging, diagnosis and discussion.

I read the book from cover to cover, and went from failing miserably to passing with better than class average. If you read the book as it is laid out, you will build on the concepts and it will introduce key points at relevant times. By the end, you will be able to think through the anatomy instead of trying to just remember a bunch of factoids.

The imaging in the book is amazing and well explained, and the cases are real. The language is very descriptive, and the illustrations and figures are great. The cranial nerves and blood supply chapters are highlights.

It shouldn't be your ONLY Neuro book, but you will use it every day even after reading it.

If I ever see Dr. Blumenfeld, I'm going to hug his leg like a little child.

Very useful

Book is very well written, easy to follow, very clinically oriented as the title suggests. It does not have the details of a full neuroscience textbook the way the Purves or Kandel books do. As a medical student you need the more detailed neuroscience part also. Still, this is the 'go to' book for clinical explanations in neurology/neuroanatomy. What I don't like about this book has to do with the publisher, not the book: After paying over a hundred Dollars for the book you only get two years of online access, after that they want you to pay an extra $30 for additional two year access, seems like a rip off.

Drake conducted more than 100 interviews in her scrupulous chronicle of fashion's most illustrious rivalry. Yves Saint Laurent, the charmed genius of effortless success, and Karl Lagerfeld, the patrician workhorse, engaged in a decades-long competition for hyperbolic headlines and jet-set celebrity, pitting their cliques against each other in bitch-slap feuds of sartorial splendor. Theirs is a world of glorious, hideous self-involvement, where heroin is an accessory, violent political unrest is an evening's amusement, and a close friend's suicide is, foremost, a contemptible blemish on an orchestrated image. Drake's subjects made their livings and their names dedicating themselves to the pursuit of surface perfection, and her comprehensive examination of their barbed, parallel arcs is appropriately superficial. These titanic designers crafted their personas as carefully as they put together their luxurious collections, and we come to know them as reflections in the mirror houses they built. Although their individual aesthetics and personal recriminations are unique, they are united in the opulent glory of their narcissistic myopia. A Fascinating Portrait of Two Fashion Legends and the Forces that Shaped Them

The Beautiful Fall is a fascinating view into the Paris fashion scene during the intensely creative and revolutionary period of the 60's and 70's (and beyond). The book concentrates on fashion as lived by the rival camps of Yves Saint Laurent and Karl Lagerfeld, but its scope is much broader. Throughout a narrative that reads as compellingly as fiction, the author analyzes the socio-cultural events that shaped the Paris fashion world. Drake astutely pays homage to the symbiotic realtionship fashion has always had with society. She also taps into the fashion world's neuroses in all their terrifying glory: Saint Laurent's and Lagerfeld's ongoing fear of being outdone by the other; YSL's battles with his own creative demons; the manic way in which Lagerfeld surrounds himself with an everchanging fashion coterie that fuels his own creativity.

Drake's writing style is fluid, with her prose as rich and elegant as the world she depicts. Turning the pages of the book, one can see, taste and feel the luxe accoutrements that are the lot of fashion royalty: the sumptuous residences, the sit-down dinners for a hundred, the plush privelige of a chauffered limousine. Yet Drake also opens a door to the down side of fashion--the wounded egos as entourage members are cut loose, the heinous drug hangovers after all night parties at Le Palace, or the letdown of a fashion season fallen flat, when an anticipated collection is panned or ignored.

Class, too, is an overriding theme. The weight of the aristocracy is evoked, with its crushing confines of hierarchy and tradition. Overwhelming, too, are the shackles of design superstardom as Saint Laurent cracks under the weight of his own legend, his genius solicited season after season by a voracious Ready-to-Wear industry churning out clothes for the masses. YSL's torturous decades of self doubt are unflinchingly rendered as he struggles not only against drug and alcohol demons, but also to compete against the fashion standard he himself has set in his prolific early years. For as the author points out, it is every designer's damning quest to not only further their own body of work, but to create something new.

The Lagerfeld saga is given equal billing. Karl's veritable style assault on the industry over decades--the creation of tens of thousands of designs for dozens of labels--culminating in his triumph at Chanel--is an unparalleled tour de force in the design world. As Drake describes it, one can't help but feel that no man has poured more of himself into fashion than Lagerfeld, bringing not only a manic drive but a Renaissance Man's arsenal of knowledge, culture, and plain old street savvy. With the advent of youth-driven social forces like Rock music, MTV, and the rise of the supermodels, fashion became in fashion, and no-one has milked it more or used it to better advantage than Lagerfeld. The fact that Lagerfeld is actually taking the book to court in France (citing invasion of privacy) is unfortunate. Drake's portrait of both men is unflinching but not unflattering; it is fascinating, and above all, human.

Given the multiple tales of excess chronicled within, some might try to pass off the book as exploitative journalism or a cheap kiss-and-tell narrative. The book is neither. The Beautiful Fall is an astutely written, brilliant portrait of a history-making period in fashion that will forever stand as testimony to those tumultuous times. It is a must-read for anyone professing a serious interest in fashion.

Must-read for anyone even remotely interested in fashion

I have been a fashion writer for about 10 years and this is absolutely one of the best fashion biographies I've read since perhaps DV by Mrs. Vreeland. The Beautiful Fall is beautifully written--a richly detailed account of Paris in the 50's through 80's packed with fashion and Parisian history, insight, and delicious gossip and scandal. You'll feel like you're there at the party and front row at shows that took place long before the televised mania over fashion began in America in the early '90s. Fabulous photos, as well.

a BEAUTIFUL book

I cannot recommend this book highly enough. Like Alicia Drake, I write on fashion, but the comparisons end there, as Drake, who is superlatively gifted author, truly exists in a league all her own. Her treatment of this gripping topic--fashion-world excesses and catfights in 1970s Paris--is nothing short of excellent: astonishingly well researched, fascinatingly detailed, and wonderfully readable. THE BEAUTIFUL FALL is a must-have for anyone who cares about clothing, or Paris, or just plain terrific writing.

This book is among my favorites in my Pagan library. I have had it since it was published and have over the years bought several copies. It's either been referred to so much it's fallen apart or has been borrowed and never returned. The brilliance of Scott's teachings are that he teaches only what's worked for him but he gives permission to you as Practitioner to evolve into your own Witch - you can tweak the spells so that they work for you and he applauds that and suggests that you do just exactly that. I have always had nothing but respect for the man and his writing - and am sad that he's no longer in this world to write more and share more of his wisdom.

This is a great book to give to a new witch, one who is just starting out on their path and also for those who're perhaps more jaded and have been on their path for decades and maybe needing a reminder as to why they stepped onto this way in the first place - there's inspiration in these pages.

Also, the illustrations by Robin Wood make me want a coloring book of those pictures as well!! Stunning work all around!

Cunningham is great at writing helpful guides for beginners on the path of the Goddess. This book is no exception. The spells are simple and the ingrediants are easily found. No climbing to the top of a maple tree to get the highest leaf to throw in a stream running east. =P Don't you hate that?! ;) This book is a continuation of Earth Power, but you don't have to read that one first. This book has instructions for doing spells using each of the elements. There are also spells that use snow and stars which is rather unique. Also, there is a chapter at the end on how to write and perform your own spells! This is refreshing because it truly does help when your own energy goes into your rituals. I would also recommend Wicca: The Guide for the Solitary Practitioner by Cunningham. It is still my favorite of all time for beginners. Best of luck on your journey, and Blessed Be!

Scott Cunningham Does it Again

Earth, Air, Fire, and Water is a follow-up to the book Earth Power. Both are comprehensive guides to simple folk magick, which doesn't require elaborate ritual but for those who crave ritual can be easily incorporated. But the two books are not clones, nor is Earth, Air, Fire, and Water simply a padded re-release or sequel to Earth Power. They use a similar setup, and cover the same topic, folk magick, but Earth, Air, Fire, and Water is almost wholly new. It covers some of the topics discussed in Earth Power, but encompasses a range of new or related topics. Earth, Air, Fire, and Water is indespensible among Cunningham's volume of works. If you want a comprehensive guide to folk magick, and have read Earth Power (you should start with Earth Power), then Earth, Air, Fire, and Water is definitely for you. If you haven't read Earth Power, then do, and then come back for this one, you will learn, be entertained, and probably recommend this and other Scott Cunningham books to friends before too long.

DO NOT BUY FOR KINDLE.

The only chapters indexed for kindle are sections 1, 2, 3. None of the numerous drugs or antidotes can be found in the table of contents making the manual impossible to use efficiently. A complete waste of money. If you buy the book, spring for the paper version. I cannot even comment on the content because it is so impossible to use that I have barely accessed it at all.

If you read Section one prior to your rotation, you will shine in your first week.
Even during the rotation, I'm coontinually going back to this book.

This book is available at my place of work and several of my colleagues, nurses and physicians, have their own copies for reference. I recommend this book to anyone who wants a concise source of toxicological information.

Good for a question book, but better board review options are out there

As far as practice question books go, this is right on the money. There's tons of practice questions, split up by clerkship (which helps if you're studying for shelf exams). The explanations are good at showing not only why the correct answer is correct, but why the other options are wrong. I didn't give it 5 stars since the questions are a bit on the shorter side compared to the real board. But other than that, it's good review.

Actually, my biggest complaint is not with the book per se, but that if you're serious about practicing for the boards, you're better off going with an online qbank. While they're more expensive than this Qbook, you get much more content, better explanations, and you can tailor your studying to your weak areas.

But as far as QBooks go, I'd recommend this one.

Good and loved the price

I love doing practice questions (much better than reading review books), so when I saw this one and the good price, I had to have it. While going through the questions, I didn't notice many mistakes or typos, and the topics seemed fairly similar to the real thing.

I ended up only studying from this Qbook and 1 other review book before Step 2. My hope was to avoid having to buy other materials (specifically I didn't want to shell out for another online question bank). Although I didn't feel too great on the day of the test, I ended up with a good score (>245).

Useful for the Step 2CK!

I own the 2009 edition of this book, so I'm going to review that. While I didn't use the book as my primary question source (it is strongly advisable to use one of the popular online qbanks (Usmle World/Kaplan/Usmle Rx) for that as they are more thorough), this book was very useful to me during the last few weeks of my step 2CK to help me assess my "readiness".

According to an online seminar of Kaplan Medical I once heard, Dr. Steven Daugherty (author of the study skills and exam strategies section included in this book) mentioned that if you consistently score (in multiple blocks in timed format) between 60-65% correct you are going to either get a low pass or borderline fail; between 65-70% you are going to pass; and greater than 70% you are going to score high. So this qbook was very helpful to me in giving me my percentage scores of each subject discipline as I did them in a timed manner.

But to get a more accurate idea of my score, I used First Aid's Step 2CK Q&A which has an 8 block exam to simulate the exam experience (in addition to questions according to organ system/subject wise). This was also a good resource that I used during my last week before the exam. I did 4 blocks from the simulation exam and scored 66%. I also did the latest free 3 block exam from the USMLE website and scored 72%. I scored well on the actual exam.

Most people use NBMEs to give them their predictive score to assess their exam readiness and that can be helpful. I also used them. But I found the percent scale system of Dr. Daugherty much more reliable and useful. As long as you are consistently scoring between 65-70% you will pass and if you are consistently scoring more than 70%, you will kill this exam.

Speaking of Dr. Daugherty, he has a VERY USEFUL website with free information on how to tackle the USMLEs (it is usmlethought.com - be sure to add the www!). His exam strategies included in this qbook were very helpful to me even though I did not follow those suggestions of his that didn't work with my studying/exam taking style. The most useful take home message that Dr. Daugherty gives in this book and his website is that the Steps are two fold:

1. They test your understanding of medical knowledge and your skill to reason and think like a physician in clinical vignette setting; and

2. They test your test-taking skills - your ability to pace yourself and maintain your concentration for 8 to 9 hours. Timing and concentration is KEY to doing well on this exam.

Overall, this book was useful to me. Hence, I give it 5 stars!
